Dvorak

Dvorak is an alternate keyboard layout reputedly designed for efficiency in the English language. If you are a quick learner and touch typist who spends a lot of time pounding away on the keyboard, it might be worth considering learning it.

[edit] 2 Using Dvorak in Mac OS X

Go to the International section of the Preferences and select the Input Menu tab.

You can check plain Dvorak (DV) or Dvorak - Qwerty CMD (DQ), where commands like CMD-C and CMD-V stay on the same keys. I started with DQ and switched to DV when I started to become comfortable.

The "Keyboard Shortcuts..." button will let you assign a keyboard command to quickly switch between layouts. Checking the "Show input menu in menu bar" will let you easily switch layouts and access utilities from the menu bar. Check the "Keyboard Viewer" option to add this utility to that menu:

That will give you a way to look at the layout of the keys on the layout currently being used.

  • DVAssist -- I haven't used it, but it looks like it might be useful.
